NCC Education Level 5 Diploma in Computing (L5DC)
The NCC Education Level 5 Diploma in Computing (L5DC) is an Ofqual regulated qualification. The qualification (with specialisms) makes up the second year of the NCC Education degree journey and builds upon the knowledge gained during the Level 4 Diploma in Computing (L4DC) or Level 4 Diploma in Computing with Business Management (L4DC BM), exposing students to greater detail and more advanced topics in database development, information systems analysis, network security, and cryptography.
Direct Entry to Level 5 for Diploma & University Students
Many students join at Level 4, but applications are accepted for direct entry into Level 5 if you have studied 2 years of a Bachelor’s degree (BTech, BCA, BSc), hold a 3-Year Polytechnic Technical Diploma, or have equivalent computing background. Fast-track your completion with our expert academic evaluation.
Course Overview & Industry Capabilities
Equipping learners with academic mastery and real-world technical skills to play significant roles in IT organisations worldwide.
Advanced Technical Topics
Students will study a balance of academic and vocational subjects providing the necessary knowledge and skills to excel in IT organisations, diving deep into network security, cryptography, database development, agile workflows, and mobile application engineering.
Top-Up Degree Progression
Upon successful completion, students can complete the final year of a degree with the NCC Education Business Computing & Information Systems Top-Up (UCLan) online, the University of Greenwich Computing Top-Up at partner centres, or apply to Year 3 at partner universities.
Specialist Pathways
The curriculum features high-impact specialisms. Students pursuing the Cyber Security specialism (L5DC CS) gain direct progression onto the BSc (Hons) Cyber Security and Networking Top-Up Degree, creating targeted pathways into elite cyber defense careers.
Units & Modular Curriculum
Students must pass all four specialist units and two elective units (total 6 units, 120 UK credits).
Four Specialist Units (Compulsory)
All students must successfully complete these four foundational specialist units.
Networking Security and Cryptography
Exposes students to cryptographic techniques, symmetric and asymmetric encryption (AES, RSA), secure hashing algorithms, digital signatures, public key infrastructure (PKI), firewall architectures, intrusion detection/prevention systems (IDS/IPS), and security audit methodologies.
Computing Project (Capstone)
An extensive individual software development and research capstone project. Students autonomously formulate specifications, design system architectures, implement robust code, test and evaluate solutions against commercial standards, and deliver a comprehensive formal report.
Agile Development
Explores modern iterative delivery paradigms including Scrum, Kanban, and Extreme Programming. Students master user story drafting, sprint planning, continuous integration and continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines, test-driven development (TDD), and collaborative version control workflows.
Mobile App Development
Focuses on native and cross-platform mobile application engineering. Covers UX/UI design patterns for handheld devices, consumption of RESTful services, persistent offline storage, mobile sensor integration (GPS, camera, accelerometer), and app store preparation.
Seven Elective Options
Students customize their degree pathway by selecting two elective units matching their career aspirations.
Data Analysis and Visualisation with Python
In-depth data engineering and visual storytelling using Python’s scientific stack (NumPy, Pandas, Matplotlib, Seaborn). Covers data wrangling, cleaning dirty datasets, statistical summaries, exploratory analysis, and interactive dashboard creation.
Artificial Intelligence
Foundations of artificial intelligence, state-space search algorithms, knowledge representation, rule-based reasoning, machine learning paradigms, neural networks, natural language processing, and the ethical considerations of autonomous intelligence.
Back End Web Development
Server-side architecture, RESTful API design, database connection pooling, asynchronous handlers, authentication protocols (JWT, sessions), server security hardening, and deployment on cloud hosting platforms.
Introduction to Data Science and Big Data
Architectural principles of big data systems, distributed data processing models (Hadoop, MapReduce, Spark), scalable data storage, NoSQL datastores, data pipelines, and predictive analytics in enterprise contexts.
IT Project Management
Methodologies and tools for executing IT initiatives. Covers project charters, work breakdown structures, critical path method, risk management, cost control, team leadership, and quality gates based on PRINCE2 and PMBOK standards.
Professional and Career Development in IT
Cultivates personal professional growth, workplace ethics, British Computer Society (BCS) codes, continuing professional development (CPD), technical portfolio development, communication skills, and tech career planning.
Analysis, Design and Implementation
Advanced software systems engineering, architectural design patterns, domain modeling, enterprise application integration, system refactoring, and comprehensive deployment lifecycle management.
Entry Requirements & Direct Entry Routes
Directly imported from NCC Education’s official L5DC qualification requirements.
Standard Entry to L5DC
For entry onto the NCC Education L5DC qualification, students must have at least one of the following:
- NCC Education Level 4 Diploma in Computing (L4DC).
- A local or international qualification deemed to be of a similar level to the NCC Education L4DC qualification (agreed with NCC Education in advance).
Direct Entry at Other Points
Applications are accepted for entry by means of documented evidence using the following criteria:
- The applicant’s general educational background is appropriate for the level of entry.
- The applicant’s knowledge of computing is both equivalent to, and appropriate for, the level of entry (such as polytechnic diplomas or completed degree coursework).
Language Proficiency
If a potential student’s first language is not English, they will need:
- A valid score of 5.5 or above in IELTS (International English Language Testing System) or equivalent.
- Alternatively, take the free NCC Education Higher English Placement Test administered online by RITHS®.
